History

Our Legacy of Service

The Somerset Township Fire and EMS Department was established on September 1, 1977, by a group of dedicated citizens who recognized the urgent need for a local fire department to serve the community. After months of hard work and commitment, the department officially began operations on June 1, 1979. Over the years, the department has achieved several key milestones that reflect its growth and dedication to public safety. On September 1, 1994, the department expanded its services to include Medical First Responder rescue operations, enhancing its ability to provide critical medical assistance. July 1, 2008, marked the beginning of 24/7 staffing, ensuring that the community has continuous access to emergency services. Shortly after, on October 22, 2008, the department introduced a Basic Life Support ambulance staffed with Paramedics, further improving its medical response capabilities. Continuing its trajectory of advancement, on July 1, 2010, the department upgraded to Advanced Life Support services with its own Paramedics, allowing for more comprehensive medical care during emergencies. Due to the township’s significant size and the high population density around the lake areas, since 1996, the Somerset Township Fire and EMS Department has been the second busiest in Hillsdale County, including the City of Hillsdale. This high call volume underscores the department’s vital role in maintaining public safety and its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property around the clock.
